Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD
People with OCD typically experience both obsessions and compulsions although it is also possible to experience obsessive thoughts without compulsions. Obsessions come in three forms; words in your head such as ‘what if…’, images in your mind and sudden urges to do something. Obsessions are unwanted and often appear very suddenly in your mind and cause distress. Obsessions are usually not in keeping with your personality and values which can be even more distressing. There are various themes that obsessions can fall under including repugnant obsessions, religious obsessions and sexual obsessions.
Compulsions often stem from obsessions. Obsessions often leave people feeling discomfort and anxiety and a sense that something ‘isn’t right’. Compulsions are behaviours that are designed to make someone feel better and this act is usual a ritual or a behaviour that is repeated exactly the same way every time. People often feel like they have no choice and are compelled to perform this behaviour even though logically they can see the behaviour will make little difference-this can create a lot of distress for people with OCD. Common compulsive acts include checking, seeking reassurance, cleaning, handwashing, counting and repeating words.
We offer CBT, ACT and CFT for people experiencing OCD.
