Online Therapy FAQs

Online Therapy – Frequently Asked Questions.

Online interactions are becoming more and more common and popular but with something as personal as therapy, prospective clients often understandably have a few questions. Here, we go through and answer some of the more common questions we get in regards to online therapy:

What is online therapy?

Online Therapy is very similar to face-to-face therapy but it enables you to have psychological therapy sessions in the comfort of your own home. Most major types of therapy are available online such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment, EMDR, and Schema Therapy. There are certain types of difficulties that may not be best suited to online therapy, for example if you are struggling with strong suicidal ideation. At The Psychology Company, our Psychologists will advise whether Online Therapy can suit your needs in the initial consultation.

Is online therapy safe?

Online Therapy can be very safe. At the Psychology Company, we only use GDPR approved video conferencing technologies e.g. Google Meet and Zoom. These technologies regularly undergo independent verification of their security, privacy, and compliance controls to ensure user safety. If you are looking for online therapy, always ensure your provider uses technologies that are independently verified for security and privacy.

Does online therapy help?

Online Therapy does help and can be as effective as face-to-face therapy. A 2014 study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that online treatment was just as effective as face-to-face treatment for depression. There have been several similar studies, for example A 2018 study published in the Journal of Psychological Disorders found that online cognitive behavioral therapy is, “effective, acceptable, and practical health care.” The study found the online cognitive behavioral therapy was equally as effective as face-to-face treatment for major depression, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder.

How much does online therapy cost?

Online Therapy is the same cost as in-person therapy at The Psychology Company

Can you do EMDR therapy online?

Online EMDR therapy works in the same way as face-to-face EMDR therapy in terms of processing. It is not less effective than face-to-face EMDR therapy. It is just carried out online.
