What is Psychodynamic Therapy
Psychodynamic therapy looks at the dynamics in our internal world (how we relate to ourselves and different parts of ourselves) and our external world (how we relate to the world around us and other people). There is a focus on understanding the links between past and present experiences.
Making sense of difficulties and past experiences can help resolve conflicts within ourselves and in our relationships with others. The Psychodynamic approach is sometimes referred to as ‘uncovering therapy’ because it’s aim is to look deeper into problems, to make what may has been unconscious, conscious. It can create understanding of how our behaviour and mood may continue to be influenced by unresolved issues from the past.
In psychodynamic therapy, we are trying to understand the unconscious links between past and present, explore the interplay between our internal and external world and pay attention to the dynamics that arise between client and therapist. With greater awareness and understanding of what causes us distress and how re respond as we do, we are in a better place to change our behaviour and how we relate to ourselves and others.
